Every first Friday of the month, the Portland Arts & Cultural Alliance, a non-profit organization with the mission of “empowering and supporting artists in order to strengthen Portland”, hosts a fabulous self-guided tour of local art galleries, studios, museums, and alternative art venues.  This month I had the pleasure of attending with two of my girlfriends and as we explored several of the galleries, an exciting energy could be felt as a city that was covered in snow just a few short weeks earlier, was embracing the wonderfully warm May evening. Our first stop was Aucocisco Galleries, a fine art gallery representing predominantly mid-career artists and a smaller number of emerging newer artists.  This month’s primary exhibition is the work of Mary Hart and titled Lexicon.

“This collection of diptychs is a lexicon of elements in my visual language.   Each painting in the diptych has a unique meaning, but when paired with the second image, the meanings change.  Content resides in the relationship between the two paintings.” Mary Hart, Aucocisco Galleries

You can find more of Mary’s work by visiting the Aucocisco Galleries on upper Exchange Street in Portland or on their website.

Our second stop was Greenhut Gallery where the works of Joseph Nicoletti and Ying Li’s were on display for a full house.

Mr. Nicoletti’s work represented calm and serene landscapes of Italy and France, evoking a desire to be transported to one of the many rolling green Italian fields to sip wine and eat fresh, crusty bread dipped in olive oil among the flowers.

The third stop was at Minott’s Flowers, a spectacularly gifted florist that hosted Jen Dean Photography in their upstairs gallery.

After leaving Minott’s we visited A Fine Thing - Edward T. Pollack Rare Books & Fine Art, Susan Maasch Fine Art, and Sanctuary Tattoo which fits the “alternative art” venue description.

The last gallery we visited was Holly Ready Studio, which has the most magical landscape paintings that evoke dreamlike images with a supremely masterful touch.  About 15 years ago, as a 20-something and a new mother, I purchased a Holly Ready painting of a little girl wearing a rain coat and sniffing the flowers in her mother’s garden.  It reminded me of my little girl and I was thrilled to have a painting to capture that period in our lives.  Now 15 years later, Holly’s style has evolved, matured, and improved (much as I have) to a place where her work continues to speak to me.

Oooo - I am so aching to go to Maine. My partner lived in Camden for a period of time after high school, and he's always had fond things to say about the Maine coast. I think this fall we'll drive up and take the lighthouse tour. What a wonderful tour you've given us through your blog! I'm so back you've gotten back on the horse - your blog will be a daily stop!
